Oops...the diagnostic tool wouldn't download...Before you build anything, ask these 5 questions

Here is something I see constantly in my work with organizations.

Someone comes with a request to solve a business problem. The request sounds reasonable. The professional gets to work. Something gets built, delivered, and checked off the list.

And six months later, nothing has changed.

Not because the thing was bad. Because it was solving the wrong problem. The request on the surface is almost never the whole story.

  • A call for an internal communication is sometimes a change management failure.
  • A request for resilience or mindfullness speaker is sometimes a staffing problem that nobody has been willing to name out loud.
  • A leadership development initiative is sometimes an organizational design issue that needs to be fixed before any development can land.

You feel me?

The most valuable skill a problem solver can develop is the ability to get to the real problem before picking up the tools.

I put together a one-page diagnostic you can use before your next stakeholder conversation. It is called Five Questions to Ask Before You Agree to Build Anything. You can download it here.

These are the questions that separate order-takers from trusted advisors. They are short, they are direct, and they work whether you are inside an organization or running your own practice.

One thing I want to name: asking these questions is not about slowing things down or being difficult. It is about earning the right to build something that actually matters. Leaders notice the difference. And over time, being the person who asks better questions is what gets you invited into the room earlier.

I will be exploring this further in an ATD Nashville in-person event titled: The Business of Learning: How to Partner, Influence, and Deliver Value Inside and Outside the Organization.

Register here and join us at Dale Carnegie - 25 Century Blvd, Suite 208, Nashville, TN 37214 on Tuesday, May 12, 5:30–7:30 p.m. If you are in the area, I would love to see you there.

In the meantime, grab the diagnostic and try it on something you are working on right now.

That is the finding from new data out of Indeed's Hiring Lab, covered this week by Forbes. The real crisis is not artificial intelligence. It is a growing mismatch driven by the convergence of three forces: baby boomer retirements, slower immigration, and AI quietly reshaping white-collar work from the inside out. The...

I meet with leaders struggling with their talent strategy almost weekly. You, too, are likely struggling with how to leverage your people resources more efficiently. I cannot tell you how many first meetings start the same way. A leadership team shows up with a long list. Training is not working. Processes are messy. Roles feel unclear. People are frustrated. Everyone is right. And everyone is overwhelmed. I learned the hard way that speed without clarity creates beautiful work that does not...
