The Hardest Work Leaders Do Happens Inside

I’ve worked with leaders long enough to know that most challenges don’t begin in the meeting room.

As a leader for the last 20 years, my challenges formed in my mind.

That truth hit home during our latest LEADERish: Leadership lessons straight up episode with my friend and fellow coach, Gayathri Rhiddi, who spoke about conscious leadership. Her model, the SIRE Model, is elegant and practical, but what stayed with me wasn’t the framework itself (although it is absolutely brilliant!). It was what it revealed about leadership as an inner practice.

Here’s what I’ve been sitting with since our conversation.

Accountability Starts with Awareness

We talk about holding people accountable all the time, but conscious leadership flips that question: Who holds me accountable when no one’s watching?

I have been thinking about how the best leaders create conditions for clarity and trust, and that starts internally. Self-accountability isn’t about blame or perfection. It’s about noticing your own patterns and choosing to respond differently next time.

For me, that means catching the subtle moments when I rush to solve instead of listen, or when I confuse movement with progress. Awareness isn’t glamorous, but it’s where every transformation begins.

What Conscious Leadership Really Means to Me

I’ve been thinking about conscious leadership as clarity in motion. It’s the alignment between what I believe, how I feel, and how I behave. It’s awareness with action attached.

The more I work with leaders, the more I see that conscious leadership isn’t a title or a stage of mastery. It’s a lifelong habit of returning to yourself, again and again, with honesty and grace.

If you’re curious about the framework that inspired these reflections, Gayathri has generously shared her SIRE Model here: https://realizetowin.com/resources

Hey Reader, It started with a conversation with a busy executive who was juggling more priorities than one person reasonably should. Every request felt urgent. Some were important, but many were just noise. Together, we built a simple way to quiet that noise. We called it Five 4 Five. Here’s how it works: Take five minutes each morning to name the five things that matter most that day. Not the twenty-five that could matter, just the five that truly move the needle. That’s it. Wildly...

Hey Reader, I asked my team for honest feedback about how I was leading. I expected a few comments about workload or priorities. Instead, I got something that stopped me cold: “We’re not always sure what done looks like.” At first, I wanted to explain myself. I thought I had been clear. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized they were right. I was giving direction without painting the full picture. The team was left filling in the gaps, which created confusion and wasted effort. That...

Some time ago, I worked with my first client, visibly worn down from the job search grind. She had sent out dozens of applications, rewritten her resume six different ways, and still hadn’t gotten a single interview. “I feel invisible,” she said. That line stuck with me. Does it resonate with you? Have you heard it from a friend? Because I’ve heard it a lot from highly qualified people, across industries and roles. The common thread? They aren't being seen for what they could truly do. And...
