Hey Reader,
Lately, I’ve been finding myself saying the same thing over and over to leaders I coach:
“It’s not how smart you are, it’s how well you handle yourself and others that makes the difference.”
In our latest episode of the Leaderish podcast, Doris and I dove into emotional intelligence.
We talked about what it is, why it matters, and how to build it. But this wasn’t just a list of definitions or leadership theory—we shared real stories. Including the one where I, a seasoned coach, bombed an online facial expressions test (12 out of 20... ouch). Meanwhile, Doris? A cool 17.
If you take the assessment, let me know...are you a Regina or a Doris?
That small moment turned into a big lesson for me. I thought I was great at reading emotions. But my score? Not so much. That’s the beauty of EQ—it’s not about getting it perfect. It’s about learning, reflecting, and trying again.
In this episode, we explored the four pillars of emotional intelligence (shoutout to Daniel Goleman):
- Self-awareness (hello, test score reality check),
- Self-regulation (Doris shared a hilarious but oh-so-real traffic rage story),
- Social awareness (including my slightly awkward networking story where I asked a stranger to try on her coat... we’re friends now, by the way),
- And Social skills, where we explored everything from giving feedback to building authentic relationships.
We also talked tools, like the How We Feel app from Yale (seriously, download it) and the importance of reading fiction (yes, fiction!) to build empathy. And we touched on a powerful truth: high EQ leaders don’t just perform better—they create stronger, more connected teams.
💥 We also did something brand new. Our first-ever video podcast episode is now live on YouTube!
Reader, we’re excited (and a little nervous) to share it with you.
📺 Be one of the first ones to watch it here on YouTube, and please give it a thumbs up, leave a comment and share it with a friend. Every click helps the algorithm work in our favor so more people can find Leaderish and join the conversation.
If you’ve ever wondered:
- How do I stay calm in a chaotic moment?
- Am I as empathetic as I think I am?
- Can I really get better at dealing with people?
This episode is for you.

Let’s stop glorifying “IQ-only” leadership and start talking about the power of emotional connection. Because how you make people feel... That’s the legacy you leave.
Cheers to growing together,
Regina
