The Power of Five Minutes

Hey Reader,

It started with a conversation with a busy executive who was juggling more priorities than one person reasonably should. Every request felt urgent. Some were important, but many were just noise.

Together, we built a simple way to quiet that noise. We called it Five 4 Five.

Here’s how it works:

Take five minutes each morning to name the five things that matter most that day. Not the twenty-five that could matter, just the five that truly move the needle.

That’s it.

Wildly practical.

Five 4 Five.

They began using it immediately, and I did too. Within days, the shift was noticeable. Clarity replaced chaos. The workday started with purpose instead of panic. When you take a few minutes to name what truly matters, everything else starts to align.

And that same principle...simple clarity...is just as powerful in hiring.

When leaders slow down to identify the five most critical things a new hire must do well, they make better choices. Job descriptions become focused. Interviews become meaningful. The right candidate becomes clear. Simplicity works everywhere, from your personal to-do list to your next hire.

We talked about this in our latest Leaderish: leadership lessons straight up podcast episode: how simplicity often leads to better results, whether it is designing your day or building your team. Because focus creates alignment, and alignment drives success.

So tomorrow morning, take five minutes.

Write your five.

Then notice how the rest of your day begins to shape itself around what actually counts.

Simple really is better, whether you are prioritizing your day or finding the right person for the job.

Reflection prompt:

What would your Five 4 Five list look like tomorrow morning?

Unemployment at 8% by 2040. Not because of a recession. Not because AI took all the jobs. Because the jobs that exist and the workers available to fill them stopped lining up. That is the finding from new data out of Indeed's Hiring Lab, covered this week by Forbes. The real crisis is not artificial intelligence. It is a growing mismatch driven by the convergence of three forces: baby boomer retirements, slower immigration, and AI quietly reshaping white-collar work from the inside out. The...

Here is something I see constantly in my work with organizations. Someone comes with a request to solve a business problem. The request sounds reasonable. The professional gets to work. Something gets built, delivered, and checked off the list. And six months later, nothing has changed. Not because the thing was bad. Because it was solving the wrong problem. The request on the surface is almost never the whole story. A call for an internal communication is sometimes a change management...
