What If You’re Closer to Your Dream Job Than You Think?

Hey Reader,

Last night, I joined a group of folks going through career transitions. I was asked to speak to them about adjacent skills, but instead we dove in and did some deep work.

One participant had just earned their master’s degree and was finally ready to pursue the role they’d been dreaming about. However, after years of running their own business, they were unsure how to position themselves in a corporate HR role. Midway through the session, they saw it clearly. After the meeting, they sent me a message on LinkedIn expressing their gratitude for helping them connect the dots between subtle, transferable skills in a different role. WOW!!

Another participant, deep in the middle of a career pivot, had a breakthrough moment when they realized they had been discounting their own experience. Not because it didn’t matter, but because they hadn't connected it to where they wanted to go. With one shift in perspective, they started speaking truth to their adjacent skills with confidence.

These were just two of the stories that emerged during the session I led on navigating career change through adjacent skills. We didn’t talk about scrapping resumes or starting over. We talked about reframing. Refocusing. Finding the throughline between what you’ve done and what’s next.

At the heart of the session was a simple but powerful three-sentence structure to communicate your career story:

  1. Here’s what I’ve done
  2. Here’s what I’m great at
  3. Here’s where I’m headed and why

For many, this framework was the moment of clarity. It gave them language, and more importantly, ownership. Because shifting careers isn’t just about gaining new skills, it’s often about rediscovering the value of the ones you already have.

If you’ve been feeling like your next move is out of reach, take a second look at the experiences you’re bringing with you. Your next chapter might be built on the strengths you've already been using.

And sometimes, all it takes is a better way to talk about them.

If you are in transition, I highly recommend joining the ultra-supportive and helpful Middle Tennessee SHRM Career Transition Group. This is a free group that meets every other week. You don't need to be a member to join. They will offer you a free six-month membership while you are searching for your next role.

I’ve worked with leaders long enough to know that most challenges don’t begin in the meeting room. As a leader for the last 20 years, my challenges formed in my mind. That truth hit home during our latest LEADERish: Leadership lessons straight up episode with my friend and fellow coach, Gayathri Rhiddi, who spoke about conscious leadership. Her model, the SIRE Model, is elegant and practical, but what stayed with me wasn’t the framework itself (although it is absolutely brilliant!). It was...

Hey Reader, It started with a conversation with a busy executive who was juggling more priorities than one person reasonably should. Every request felt urgent. Some were important, but many were just noise. Together, we built a simple way to quiet that noise. We called it Five 4 Five. Here’s how it works: Take five minutes each morning to name the five things that matter most that day. Not the twenty-five that could matter, just the five that truly move the needle. That’s it. Wildly...

Hey Reader, I asked my team for honest feedback about how I was leading. I expected a few comments about workload or priorities. Instead, I got something that stopped me cold: “We’re not always sure what done looks like.” At first, I wanted to explain myself. I thought I had been clear. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized they were right. I was giving direction without painting the full picture. The team was left filling in the gaps, which created confusion and wasted effort. That...
